IMA Statement about new GB- Republic of Ireland travel ID rules

“We are aware of reports regarding changes to identity document requirements for ferry passengers travelling between Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland from 28 September and are considering what this means for EU and EEA EFTA citizens, and their family members whose rights are protected under the Withdrawal Agreement and the EEA EFTA Separation Agreement.

“From the end of September anyone travelling between Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland will be required to use their passport for identification.

“The matter has been raised with us by the charity Settled and we have contacted the Home Office to understand how the requirements announced by ferry operators, which follow similar requirements from airlines travelling between Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, interact with citizens’ rights under the Agreements. We are seeking assurance from the UK Government that anyone with rights under the Agreements is able to exercise those rights when travelling, and that they are not disadvantaged by decisions taken by individual carriers.
