National ID cards

The IMA is aware of concerns about the lack of information available regarding the use of Identity Cards to enter the UK beyond 31 December 2025. Article 14(1) of the Withdrawal Agreement provides that: ‘Five years after the end of the transition period, the host State may decide no longer to accept national identity cards for the purposes of entry to or exit from its territory if such cards do not include a chip that complies with the applicable International Civil Aviation Organisation standards related to biometric identification.’ The IMA has raised concerns with the Home Office about its guidance and continues to explore its intentions for non-ICAO compliant ID cards, post 31 December 2025.
