Entering and exiting the UK
EU and EEA EFTA citizens or their family member granted status under the EU Settelment Scheme will have the right to enter and exit the UK.
An EU and EEA EFTA citizen may travel to and from the UK with an eVisa (set up through a UKVI account) and either a valid Passport or valid National Identity card registered to their UKVI account.
Family members who are not an EU or EEA EFTA citizen, may travel to and from the UK with an eVisa (set up through a UKVI account) and a valid passport registered to their UKVI account.
No additional exit visa, entry visa or equivalent formality is required from those with settled status or pre-settled status. This is the same for those with residence rights in Gibraltar.
An EU or EEA EFTA citizen, may hold a valid national ID card for use as an official identity and nationality document. They may use this to apply for the EUSS, and may also use this as their primary document for travel linked to their eVisa/UKVI account between the UK and other EU member states instead of a valid passport.
Certificate of Application and travel
For those who have applied to the EUSS and have a Certificate of Application, they may be required to provide additional evidence to enter and exit the UK. The type of evidence required will depend on whether they are an EU and EEA EFTA national, a non-EU national or a joining family member.
If they are travelling out of the UK for long periods of time they will need to check the periods of absence allowed to retain their EUSS status to continue living in the UK.
We have a dedicated page which outlines support and information on travel. It can be accessed via the link below.
