Travel Guidance

Here you can find our latest travel information and guidance, which we continually update. The information in some videos may have changed since being published. Please keep an eye on our social media pages, news page and FAQ page for the most up to date information.

We are aware that as the UK immigration system changes to a digital system that there may be some confusion for citizens about how they re-enter the UK.

We have also received reports from citizens regarding problems travelling and entering the UK.

We have, therefore, created some resources to help citizens better understand what they should expect to see at the border and what they need to show to travel providers or border officials when travelling back to the UK.

The resources include factsheets and videos about what to expect – please see below.

We’re keen to hear from citizens about their experiences and where they might be having difficulties travelling so, we can keep these resources updated with useful information. If you have experienced any difficulties travelling, and you are an EUSS applicant, please email our dedicated inbox to help us understand what challenges are being faced: travel@ima-citizensrights.org.uk

Border Guidance

Following reports from citizens regarding problems travelling to, and entering the UK, we also investigated the processes used by Border Force; the part of the Home Office which secures the UK border.

As a result, we created guidance for EU and EEA EFTA citizens, and joining family members, travelling to the UK to explain the facts, and what they should expect at the UK border.

The step-by-step videos cover scenarios that citizens may face depending on the form of identification they travel with and their status. For quicker entry into the UK, you may be able to use the e-Passport Gates (eGates) at the airport if you are travelling with your passport; as long as the criteria explained in Home Office guidance applies to you. If this is the case, please watch this Home Office video on using eGates.

If you encounter an issue using the eGates and are referred to a Border Force Officer, or you are not able to use the eGates at all, the IMA has produced a series of videos to explain examples of what can occur. Please refer to the video most relevant to your situation below.

EU and EEA EFTA citizens with EUSS status or a valid pending application and travelling with a passport

If you encounter an issue at the eGates, you may be referred to a Border Force Officer. The video below will tell you what to expect if this happens:
